Joanne Alsruhe Biography
I was born and raised in Baltimore County, Maryland. I attended Towson Senior High School where I took accelerated art courses and upon graduating received several art scholarships. I then attended Maryland Institute of Art where I received a work scholarship and was on the dean’s list. After retiring from my position as Supervisor of Surgical Pathology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, I can devote all of my time to painting from my home located in the Port Deposit area of Cecil County, Maryland.
My paintings are an extension of my environment. Whether at home or on vacation, I’m always looking for that perfect subject with just the right quality of lighting. Color, contrast, and realism are primary components of my work. When painting candid scenes of people seated on benches or while they are actively pursuing something of interest to them, I want to convey some emotion or story that makes the viewer stop, think and go beyond just looking at technique. Hopefully, my audience will share with me what I felt when I chose that particular subject to paint.
Painting flowers is quite different. I have the utmost admiration for the intricacy and complexity of nature and I enjoy using light to show off this phenomenon. Flower paintings to me are purely for visual enjoyment; they are colors and shapes that should be savored without the pursuit of deep-seated intentions.
